Congratulations Emma!
Congratulations to our awesome Y3 project student Emma who graduated with First Class honours. She did some great work in the lab and will be starting her PhD in London to work on a topic near and dear to our hearts - the biology of MDS! Good luck Emma, we'll miss you but we will see you at ASH in 2022!

Calreticulin in Canada
Edwin attended the 2019 Calreticulin Workshop in his sorta-hometown of Montreal, Canada to discuss some of the lab's work on calreticulin. It was a great meeting and was a chance for basic biologists to mingle with clinician-scientists to talk about all manners of things related to calreticulin (as well as other fun topics like pooping tardigrades!). Looking forward to the 2021 Workshop in Loire, France!

Jeanne wins speaker prize at the Leeds Postgraduate Symposium
A successful Leeds postgraduate symposium. Congrats to Jeanne who won one of the 3 speaker prizes for 3rd-year students for her great oral presentation describing the role of mutant CALR in MPN pathogenesis. Ghadah and Dom also presented their research as posters. Well done to everyone for their contributions!

Inaugural Yorkshire Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Symposium
MPN meets the North! Jeanne, Ghadah and Edwin (along with former lab technician and forever lab friend April) traveled to Sheffield for the inaugural White Rose Yorkshire MPN Symposium organised by Dr. Sally Thomas at Sheffield Medical School. There was lots of exciting science shared from many MPN and blood cancers labs in York, Sheffield and Cambridge, and was a great day of science with people who like to talk about CALR and MPL and JAK2 as much as we do.

ASH 2018
Jeanne, Dom and Edwin headed to sunny California to attend the ASH annual meeting in San Diego. Our work was presented at the Myeloid Workshop and in Oral Abstract sessions by our collaborators from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute at Harvard Medical School, and Edwin nervously fidgeted with his pen as he chaired the MPN Basic Biology session. Lots of exciting science!

Farewell Rachael!
Sadly, we say farewell to our amazing Research Technician and Twitter-master Rachael who has moved on to join the MedNet Group in Leeds as an Account Executive. She will be doing some incredible and important work in clinical research science communication. She has been a fantastic asset to the lab and will be miss by everyone greatly. Good luck Rachael!

Good luck April!
Sadly, the day we've all been dreading is finally here, as our indispensable, irreplaceable, amazing April is finally leaving us to begin her MRC PhD studentship at Newcastle University to work on PNH and bone marrow failure. April was not only a great help to everyone in the lab, but she has been a brilliant and productive scientist in her own right and drove many projects on her own and published a first-author paper in Blood. She will be greatly missed, but we all look forward to the amazing science she will do in her PhD. Good luck April!

Lab Moves To LC Miall Building
As part of an ambitious £100M refurbishment and modernisation of our faculty infrastructure, the lab was forced to say farewell to our old home on Level 9 of the Garstang Building and moved to fancy new lab space in the LC Miall Building. We won't miss the odd bench layout, the temperature fluctuations in the space and the occasional fly infestation, but it was a good home for over 2 years. Thanks to everyone in the lab and to our faculty technical services team for their hard work in making the move a success, and we are looking forward to collaborating soon and doing some exciting science with our new neighbours in the Zeqiraj, Bayliss, Breeze and Zhuravleva groups

Discovery Zone
Jeanne and Rachael participate in the Discovery Zone, a wonderful event run by postgraduate students as part of the Leeds Festival of Science that aims to provide outreach to young people aged 9-19 to expose them to the wonderful world of science, maths, engineering and technology. Discovery Zone gives Key Stage 2 and 3 pupils the opportunity to try hands-on science in a whistle-stop session of science exploration. Well done to everyone involved!

Mini-lab reunion
It's always great when old lab friends visit. Danielle (Y3 project student, class of 2016) and Melina (MSc student, class of 2017) came "home" for a visit, which provided a great excuse for the lab to get some Mexican food!

Erasmus visit
Edwin visited Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, Netherlands to present some of the lab's recent work on calreticulin. It was a great chance to chat about all things blood with the brilliant haematology division there at Erasmus, and to visit friend of the lab Rebekka Schneider. Thanks to Rebekka and her wonderful lab for the awesome water taxi excursion and for being such great hosts.

There will be Blood
Great way to end the year - the lab published its first paper in the journal Blood! April, Danielle and Jeanne worked with investigators at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital at Harvard Medical School to work out how mutant calreticulin binds to the thrombopoietin receptor MPL to drive MPN. Well done to everyone involved!

ASH 2017
Our work was selected for an oral presentation at this year's American Society of Hematology annual meeting in Atlanta, and presented by our collaborator Shannon from Ann Mullally's lab. The talk was very well received and we got some great feedback, including a shout-out at the Best of ASH wrap-up. Strong work everyone!
